In partnership with Texas A&M University, we are implementing a new study targeted at understanding the winter movement sites and patterns of oystercatchers here in Texas. For a portion of this program, we will be capturing and tagging oystercatchers with cellular transmitters that will provide almost real-time data. This new technology has not yet been used on oystercatchers, so we are excited to learn everything we can about our Texas birds! Our long-standing oystercatcher adoption program is still available, but now you have the opportunity to adopt a newly banded bird and learn more about where our birds go during the breeding season. For only $250, we will send you an adoption certificate when we band your bird, including a picture and specific information such as band code and sex, and will provide you with a map at the end of the breeding season of where your bird nested and spent its day.
No bird choices, birds are assigned when we catch the bird. Birds are assigned in the order they received, starting in February 2026. Adoption certificates will be furnished as soon as possible after capture. Maps will be provided in the fall, and are pending successful data retrieval.
Note: All adoptions are considered donations and are tax deductible.
Initial funding for this project was provided by the Matagorda Bay Mitigation Trust
